Under Cover of Darkness is a short, non-cosy British historical crime prequel set in 1914, introducing Police Constable Matthew Stannard when he joins the Force.

Matthew Stannard thought he knew right from wrong. His sergeant had other ideas.

March 1914. Police Constable Matthew Stannard proudly dons his uniform, eager to serve on the streets of Hackney. But the harsh realities of police work quickly shatter his idealistic dreams.

A brutal killer is attacking women across London, and Suffragettes are growing more militant, launching increasingly violent attacks that threaten to turn Matthew's beat into a battlefield.

Matthew believes he's found a clue that will lead to the killer, but his CID superiors aren't interested in his ideas. Determined to save other women from being brutally murdered, Matthew begins his own investigation all the while staving off the demands of his sergeant, a corrupt officer determined to drag the young constable into his world of intimidation and misconduct.

Matthew wants to do what's right, to stay true to his principles, but knows that speaking out could destroy his career before it has even begun.

With London's streets growing more dangerous and his own moral compass under assault, Matthew faces a choice that will define his future: Can he find the killer and bring justice to his community while staying true to his values? Or will the corruption surrounding him prove too powerful to resist?
