For King and Kaiser

August 1914.

England has declared war on Germany, and in Hackney, tensions are rising fast. German neighbours have become enemy aliens overnight, and for some, that makes them fair game.

While the country is busy mobilising for war, Special Branch has its hands full with the Germans living in England. Any one of them could be a secret agent, plotting to bring England down from within. There’s one enemy agent in particular that Detective Sergeant Maudsley is under pressure to catch: the architect of a spy network who has eluded him for months.

For PC Matthew Stannard, war means more than maintaining order on the streets. He has a decision to make: whether to remain in the police force or serve his king and country in the army. While he’s making up his mind, he encounters a German woman who may not be the respectable citizen she appears, and Matthew informs Sergeant Maudsley of his suspicions.

But Maudsley is closing in on his prey and can’t afford to be distracted. If Matthew suspects this woman to be a threat to his country’s security, then he’ll have to investigate her alone.
